Rooted Beauty.
For one of my second year modules, I created an app which aims to combat the problem of cosmetic waste and encourage responsible consumption while changing consumer habits - resulting in the reduction of waste as consumers would be more aware of the consequences of their choices.
Work from 2023

Research.
I started with a deep dive into different areas of sustainability. Some of these areas included:
NI Government Policies
DAERA’s Plan to 2050
Case Studies
ChangeMakers
UN Sustainable Development Goals
Companies and Brands
The next stage was for me to find the focus of my digital product. Once I had decided on something within the cosmetic world, I explored this area more specifically. This included looking into problems within beauty, waste in beauty and competitor analysis.
User Research
With this knowledge, I moved onto user research to find out what my users think. Also, to help me narrow down my specific target audience. This included looking at consumer attitudes and generational views.
Additionally, I carried out a user survey to learn more about the sustainability and responsible consumption habits of my intended users.
All this information informed my user personas, empathy maps, user flows and storyboards, as well as customer journey maps. This gave me a clear understanding of the users’ needs and how Rooted Beauty could help.
The Brand.
I enjoyed creating the logo for the brand as I found the main typeface meant the letters of R and B created numerous logomark options. I sketched out ideas and then created digital versions - which led me to the final logo.
With my target audience decided, I moved to brainstorming and sketching what the brand would look like.
I created a mission statement and brand values to begin with, so I had a solid foundation to build from. I brainstormed multiple name options, until I decided on ‘Rooted Beauty’. The message behind it being the concept of going back to the Earth’s roots, linking to the focus on sustainability.
Using tools like Fontjoy, I created multiple iterations for typography options until I came to the final set.
Wireframes.
With the brand complete, I moved onto creating wireframes of my app design. I started with simple sketch wireframes, where I considered the amount of screens I would need and what content.
I took these sketches and created low fidelity mock ups on Figma. Here I was able to add the phone device dimensions and make adjustments accordingly from the sketches.
Adding detail, content and design elements to these low fidelity screens left me with my final screen outcomes. Using tools like Unsplash for imagery, as well as my previous research into sustainable brands, I was able to bring the app to life.
Prototype.
I created a simple prototype to show the user flows and path the user would take when using the Rooted Beauty app.
